The Germantown Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. is asking our neighbors to adopt a fire hydrant on your street and make sure that we can find it and use it, in the event of an emergency. Our crews are finding it very difficult to locate fire hydrants that we have in our map books because they are completely buried in the snow. While you are out shoveling your walks and vehicles please take a little extra time to locate the fire hydrant closest to your home and dig it out.
When a fire emergency breaks out, seconds do count. A short delay may be the difference between life and death.
After approximately 50 inches of snow blanketed Montgomery County and the Germantown area, community fire leaders are turning to area residents, asking them to consider clearing neighborhood fire hydrants of snow and ice when shoveling their drives or walkways.
When firefighters are wearing their heavy equipment, and dragging heavy hoses to be connected to a hydrant, they need extended room to work. Fire leaders said residents should consider clearing a four-foot diameter around each hydrant and shoveling a path from the road to the hydrant. The more time firefighters spend floundering in knee-deep snow, the longer it takes to hook the hoses up to the hydrants, wasting precious time.
On behalf of your local fire dept (Germantown Volunteer Fire Department, Inc.)...THANK YOU!
